Albany's Times Union Center, formerly Pepsi Arena, continues to experience great success as it enters its eleventh year. Renamed in January 2007, the Times Union Center is "Upstate New York's Premier Sports and Entertainment Facility."
Owned by Albany County and operated by SMG, the world's largest private management firm for public assembly facilities, the Times Union Center has an adaptable seating capacity of 6,000 to 17,500. Since Frank Sinatra christened the building January 30, 1990, more than seven million patrons have walked through the turnstiles as the Arena has averaged 165 events a year. In 2000, the Arena ranked 14th nationally in total concert attendance. The Times Union Center ranked higher than arenas in Philadelphia and other major markets. As a multi-purpose facility, the Times Union Center has hosted a variety of events, including concerts, family shows, and sporting events.
In addition to being a regular Northeast concert stop, the Arena has developed into a sports fan's dream. The Times Union Center is home to the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League, Albany Conquest of the af2, and Siena Saints Division I College Basketball. Other sporting events that have entertained sports fans of the Capital Region include the annual NBA Classic and NHL Face-Off contests, world championship boxing, professional tennis, and the HSBC Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) basketball tournament. The Times Union Center is also a regular host to premier NCAA events including the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship East Regional First and Second Rounds, NCAA Hockey National Championships, NCAA Hockey East Regionals and the NCAA Wrestling National Championships.
